The exhibition “Symbolic Presence: The Human Form in the Art of Glyn Hughes” proposes a substantial and penetrating approach to the work of one of the most important artists of contemporary Cypriot art. Through a carefully selected section of works, the evolution of the artist’s visual language is presented, with the human form as its central axis.
The choice of the human figure as the core of the exhibition underlines the deeply anthropocentric character of Hughes’ work. His forms capture moments of everyday life and experiences, revealing a creator who approaches human existence with tenderness, intensity and substantial respect.
Of particular importance is the presentation of more personal works, which are exhibited to the public for the first time. These are creations and sketches that illuminate lesser-known aspects of his artistic production, highlighting both the artist’s radical character and his deep commitment to humanity.
At the same time, the exhibition highlights the importance of the human form as a timeless source of inspiration in Hughes’s work, recording his continuous search for the rendering of the body and human presence. Painting for the artist functions as a space of experience, where line and color are transformed into means of interpreting life itself.
The exhibition is a tribute to Hughes’ liberal spirit, focusing on the subtlety and dynamism that constitute his unique artistic identity. The visitor is invited to experience a double experience: on the one hand, a personal, almost experiential approach to the work and thought of the creator and on the other hand, a deeper understanding of his contribution to the formation of contemporary Cypriot art.
